Rt. Hon. John Major CH
John Major grew up in Brixton, and was educated at his local grammar school. He left school aged 16, and worked for Standard Chartered Bank before entering politics. He also was a member of the Lambeth Borough Council in 1968.
His political career began as a Conservative councillor in the London borough of Lambeth, and continued when he won the constituency of Huntingdon for the Conservatives in 1979, at the election which brought his predecessor, Margaret Thatcher, to power.
In the summer of 1989 John Major became Foreign Secretary. It was during his time at the Treasury that Britain joined the European Exchange Rate Mechanism in October 1990.
In November 1990, following Margaret Thatcher's resignation, he became Prime Minister. He was responsible for the negotiation of the Treaty on European Union at Maastricht. He was a man with a down-to-earth way of dealing with people and problems and went on to win the 1992 election for the Conservative party.
John Major has now retired from the House of Commons. He is an avid Cricket fan and, during the cricket season, spends a good deal of time watching the game and can often be seen at Lords during test matches.
