Les Smith - Chairman of the Trustees & Grants Officer

Les is a born Dewsbury lad, worked for a sportswear manufacturer as warehousing and distribution manager for ten years.  He then moved to the Halifax Building Society (later HBOS), where he worked for 19 years prior to accepting early retirement.

In his more youthful days he has played cricket, football and rugby to a reasonable level, for various clubs in the Yorkshire area. Still enjoys watching both cricket and rugby league. Les has not missed a Yorkshire home game in the last 11 years, and gets as time permits to most away games. This is largely due to the fact that he worked as a steward for YCCC for 14 years, and still works for Leeds Rhinos and the Tykes at Union. This is where he first met Dickie Bird.

He gave some of his time to the Foundation both prior to and after the lauch, working as a volunteer in the first year as the grants officer, then Dickie asked him to come on board as a trustee.   With the changing attitudes of some of to-days youngsters he feels the Foundation is going in the right direction to give a lot of youngsters some thing to focus their minds on and give some sense of achievement. In some of these youngsters’ cases it is too much choice that is the problem. With a little help from the Foundation this is giving them a real choice and chance to better themselves.
